MyData Phenomenon, Era, and Activity
The era of MyData has begun in Korea. As of coming into effect on August 5, 2020, the legal system for the protection and use of personal information, which are scattered and regulated by various laws such as the Personal Information Protection Act, the Information and Communication Network Act, and the Credit Information Act, has been reorganized. The Personal Information Protection Committee launched to perform personal information related affairs independently, and more diverse services are expecting based on personal information.
The first service in changes is the integration of personal account information in the financial field. Individuals will encounter an integrated financial service that includes deposits, loans, investments, and insurance according to their credit and financial situation. Besides, while creating a converged service that combines data created while individuals work or enjoy their leisure time, individuals will have more options than before. On the other hand, companies that provide these services will also thrive, creating more jobs and profits.
MyData Phenomenon — BLTS Perspective
However, looking at the MyData situation recently, we cannot clear the doubt that our expectations and motivations are rushing ahead. Personal information divides into a silo in which domains such as finance, medical, and telecommunications cannot communicate with each other and have not yet been integrated. Still, a service business <Biz> is providing under the name of MyData.
On the other hand, in terms of technology <Tech>, it is still ambiguous about what technologies help personal information use and apply them in detail. Research and development on technologies that work to protect personal information need more interests and supports before us. The legal and institutional framework also functions as a traffic light hanging at an intersection in a newly built city. The role of a lighthouse that guides numerous ships in and out of distant routes is still insufficient.
The reality is, “Okay, let’s go!” while leaving the body to a flume ride at an amusement park. It doesn’t move on the scheduled course as it does. No matter how good law i.e., GDPR is <Legal>, while creating and processing personal data, the individual as the subject is still silent without waking up. For individuals, I can’t even ask myself questions about what new rights are granted to me, how do I exercise them, what responsibilities are involved in exercising my rights, and how they affect society?
For leading us to the directive reality, it is crucial not only to list positive results unilaterally but also to empathize with why we should go in that direction socially <Social>. It works like a principle that can help to make concrete ad-hoc changes in a more comprehensive situation than the listed rules can play this role. In the era of MyData, more subjects of their data judge it to be correct based on their understanding regarding the protection and use of personal information should be actively revealed and discussed as they collide.
MyData Era — Rightful Use
The era of MyData refers to a change from the use of personal information to strengthening personal information protection until now and to more active utilization.
Protection of personal information
Personal information is a measure (statistic) that estimates the reputation of an individual. It acts as a digital ID, a means for registration. It is noteworthy it is relatively easy to respond to crises of coronavirus, this time in countries where the issuance and use of digital IDs and in a situation where quarantine and isolation are intensifying socioeconomically
Meanwhile, for individuals, social reputation is essential. In particular, as the digital world grows, reputation based on personal information gains wealth or dies. Reputation represents a person’s dignity and must be well protected. In this way, personal data results from our actions while revealing our appearance as the subject of life, so we must prevent a monopoly from someone.
Use of personal data
Personal data is a combination of mine and data and has a large part of its general value as data. It is not considered entirely personal, but the value of data that contributes to a wide range of economic welfare while sharing with the whole society should be noted. It can be seen that the value of data is not created by itself by retaining it, but rather increases through sharing and increases closely by how much it is needed rather than how much it is used.
Currently, individuals are indifferent to what purpose their information is collected and used for. In this situation, they consent to collection and use (the right to self-determination of personal information). The right to self-determination of personal information should, in some way, protect the decisions and controls over the processing of personal data, not the personal data itself. However, consent is a regulation that restricts the use of personal information, preventing the collection and use of personal information without consent. Therefore, it is necessary to understand personal information in terms of information that connects the community and the individual, not the individual’s information.
MyData Activities— Pragmatical
My data is a human form as the subject of life. We live in a virtual world together with the real world, which creates a more connected society, but sometimes it hastened our lives’ isolation. My data will help the world in which we live by legitimately revealing our actions in living two worlds that are compatible and sometimes separate, and act as an input to our thinking.
Besides, activities with MyData can create practical phenomena that help us discover new socio-economic tasks that we have not yet realized and help solve them. It will also contribute to escaping dark social phenomena and alleviating or solving social problems exposed as joint pain.
Now let’s ring the bell!
For individuals’ right to decide on their own data, companies’ my data-based service business, etc!!
“Individuals (citizens) exercise data sovereignty.”
Individuals know that their right to control their data has been expanded and is exercised properly.
“Companies discover innovative business opportunities based on personal data and create new data value.”
Companies are actively pursuing my data business, clearing concerns about potential personal information violations.
“We imagine living in a world where the creators of the data control the data themselves.”
Default values for personal data protection and use through social consensus should be derived.
